Homeowner Tips - Protecting Your Home from the Summer Heat

If you’re a homeowner, you know that it’s imperative you protect your home from the ravages of winter’s cold temperatures. Likewise, you can keep your home running smoothly during summer’s hottest months with just a few, simple jobs you can do in a day. Besides adding value to your home, you’ll gain peace of mind knowing your home will be able to withstand the hazards that summer weather can bring.

  • Get the most from your air conditioning unit. Regularly cleaning the coils on your unit will help it to run more efficiently. While it sounds like a monumental task, it’s really not. First, turn off the power to your A/C unit and open its lid or access panel. Vacuum or sweep up accumulated debris and gently wipe dirt off the compressor coils with a damp cloth. If your unit has no coils, remove debris with a garden hose.

  • Cool your home by insulating your attic. During summer, the temperature on your shingles can climb to more than 65°C. Insulating your attic can reduce your cooling costs by up to 50 percent!

  • Seal your windows and doors. Keep your home cooler by sealing your windows and doors. Apply caulk on the exterior and interior of your windows and weatherstripping around your doors.
